How does artificial intelligence actually work and how can AI tools contribute to more diverse perspectives in reporting? Claudia Isabel Rittel of the Bonn Institute and AI journalist Patrick Große teamed up to answer these and other questions in the masterclass "Using AI constructively," organized by the Bonn Institute and German broadcaster RTL.
Over the course of two days, November 27 and 28, participants learned how they can use AI responsibly and effectively in their day-to-day work. Special focus was placed on essential basic knowledge, such as understanding why AI systems such as ChatGPT, though powerful, are not factual or based on reality. The masterclass also raised awareness of AI's ecological dimension, as tools like ChatGPT require enormous amounts of energy.
Thanks to Philippe Jäckel, Head of Technology & Change at RTL NEWS, participants also gained in-depth insight into RTL's AI activities. He spoke about how AI is already being used in everyday work at RTL News and possible future uses across desks and departments in a large media organization – an practical, enriching perspective for the masterclass participants.
Two very inspiring days that not only brought us up to date on the topic of AI but also introduced us to the crucial concept of constructive journalism as a special highlight. These are exactly the two areas that can propel us into an exciting future.
