What does the Bonn Institute do?

In today's times of changing user needs, increasing news avoidance and major challenges in journalism financing, the non-profit Bonn Institute works with the media industry to find ways in which journalism must change in order to remain relevant tomorrow.

The Bonn Institute shares its knowledge through publications, events, training courses and an annual festival. This also helps build a unique network of media professionals who are committed to the idea of constructively placing people's information needs at the center of their reporting.

The Bonn Institute works with media professionals from all areas of the industry. It fosters networking, inspiration and the transfer of innovative knowledge. We take a systemic approach in our work and learn from other fields, such as psychology and mediation.

Frequently asked questions

Who are the masterclasses aimed at?

The one-and-a-half-day event is aimed at journalists and managers from all types of media and media companies. This enables us to facilitate knowledge exchange between publishing houses, non-profit and public media companies, as well as small and large media companies.

Is previous knowledge required?

Our masterclasses are suitable for experienced media professionals who are interested in constructive approaches or are already trying them out.

We work in a very practice-oriented way in the masterclasses, including by using formats that participants bring with them. Participants who would like to present their own format as part of the masterclass are welcome to make a note of this when registering.

How can I register?

You can register by sending an e-mail to: workshops@bonn-institute.org. We will send you a confirmation of registration and ask you to pay the participation fee within 14 days of registration.

By registering, you agree to our privacy policy and the processing of personal data. All information can be found here.

Where does the course take place?

The courses take place either at the Bonn Institute or at our partner media organizations throughout Germany.

If you are a media organization in Germany, Austria or Switzerland and would like to become a partner and benefit from discounted participation conditions, please send us an e-mail at workshops@bonn-institute.org to find out more.

What does the program look like?

The Bonn Institute offers masterclasses on various topics.

Further offers will be published on an ongoing basis.
A workshop starts at 12 noon to allow participants to arrive the same day. After an intense day of theory and many practical examples and exercises, we go out for dinner together in the evening (optional; participants must cover their own food costs).

On the second workshop day, we dive even deeper into our work together and share current insights from the world of constructive journalism on formats, approaches and user data.

What else do I get out of participating?

The masterclasses offer you exclusive insight into the Bonn Institute's findings on the success and effectiveness of constructive approaches in journalism.

We are constantly updating our collection of good practices, and we encourage participants to share their experiences during our masterclasses. This means that in addition to new knowledge, our masterclasses also let you take away a new, constructive network.

Will I get a certificate of completion?

After completing a masterclass, you will receive a certificate confirming your participation in the masterclass and its content.

How much does a masterclass cost and are discounts available?

The participation fee is 750 euros. We offer an early bird special of 590 euros, which saves you more than 20% percent. Information on when the early bird special is offered is available on the event page of each respective masterclass.

What is the cancellation policy?

You may cancel your booking free of charge up to 14 days before the start of the course. Please send an e-mail to workshops@bonn-institute.org. Unfortunately, it is not possible to cancel free of charge after this period.

Can I give my place to someone else?

It is possible to give your place to another person from your media organization, team or network. Please let us know at workshops@bonn-institute.org.

If I cannot attend last minute, may I take place in the masterclass at a later date?

Yes, this is generally possible if there are still places available in other workshops and it is no longer possible to cancel.

What happens if the Bonn Institute has to cancel the event at short notice?

We will then offer you an alternative date. Alternatively, we will of course refund the participation fee you have paid. Unfortunately, we cannot reimburse travel expenses.
